Creative Planning, a Leawood-based wealth-management firm, has roughly $2 billion in assets managed, up roughly 300 percent since 2008. Peter Mallouk, its president and chief investment officer, seems to be closing in on a similar number of industry accolades. Whatever the numbers, they are not of his own doing, he'll tell you. He passes full credit on to a staff of 70 at Creative and its affiliated companies. He's gone out of his way to hire thoroughbreds - and removed the reins. It begins with screening applicants to ensure that they are self-starters. Once on staff, those who demonstrate a capacity for high-level performance are free to move about the firm to any open position that intrigues them. The rewards: Earnings half again the industry average, benefits that include 100 percent-paid health insurance, 401(k) and profit-sharing matches, flex hours and unlimited vacation at the employee's discretion—circling back to that high-performance caveat. It's not just dealing in wealth, it's dealing in wealth with a purpose, as evinced by Creative's own support for more than 40 area charities (Mallouk himself was a founder of the KC CAN! children's charity). As a consequence of all that, six of the seven Creative companies had their best quarter ever in the first 90 days of 2011, a period that saw more new clients than any time in the firm's 28-year history.
